Running: What is a the best way to start a 4 mile run - fast or slow? I am a US Army NCO and one of the longest running debates is how to start a run - sprint or jog. I run a 13:30 two mile and a 58:00 eight mile - so I am an OK runner. But when training others who average 14:00 to 17:00 two-mile times what is the best way to start a 4 mile run. This is for an information paper so I need more than opinion (although I want to hear those too). Please give as many references as you can.

Even if I still run with perfect gear and shoes, will I still damage/harm my knees. I just didn't want to have anything messed up or any problems when I grow up to be around 40+. How much running is safe for a high school freshman? I ran in cross country this season (our cross country team is super intense, averaging 6-7 miles six days a week) so I definitley am in shape. How often should I change my running sneakers? I run from late January all the way through mid November. I run about 35-45 miles a week 6 days a week depending on what my coach wants me to run. I never run in the rain or snow only when it is sunny. How often should I change my sneakers? Is once a year good, or what because my dad does not want to keep buying my new running sneakers that often. Also, I have another pair of sneakers not for running so I just use my running shoes while running.

Is running on an incline good for weight loss? I run for about 15-20 minutes at the gym (It's not long I know but I go about 10-11km/h and am building up speed instead of time). I recently started running on a very slight incline. Gradient 2 on the treadmill. It's not a lot, but it's enough for me to feel it without it being too hard. Is this more beneficial in terms of weightloss to run like this, than just running flat? Thanks.

Can fixing a constantly running toilet be the solution to my high electric bill and standing water in my lawn? My toilet runs constantly. I can lift the black plunger bubble looking thing (not too familiar with toilets, sorry) and the toilet will cease running. Anyways, I'm planning on buying a toilet repair kit at the local dollar general for 8 bucks and googling how to fix it. My main question is this: my electric bill is outrageously high from month to month (way more usage on the bill than what I could possibly using WAY WAY more, I use 3000 kwh a month and try hard to conserve electricity). Could a constantly running toilet (it's been running for a month now) be causing my electric bill to be so high? Lastly, I have a ton of water in my front yard and there's been an ongoing drought all summer. All my neighbors yards are like concrete they're so dry. In my front yard there is a large diameter that is like walking through a swamp or something. Could this be caused by the constantly running toilet (maybe causing the septic tank to overflow? not sure..)? Please help, thanks!
What type of running shoes should I be looking at? I run mostly outside on pavement or dirt/gravel, then occasionally on treadmills. I run about 2 to 3 miles / 6 days a week. Because I run outside should I look at trail shoes or go with a regular running shoe? Also, anyone have any suggestions on good brands to try?
Which running back would you start in a fantasy league? Knowshon Moreno or Joseph Addai? I have a solid starting running back but I'm in a league where you start 2 running backs. Addai is a great running back but he is going to be splitting carries with Brown. Knowshon Moreno was a good college RB and now with the broncos losing their star quarterback and their star WR questionable Moreno may get a bulk of the work, but he's an unproven rookie at the moment. See my dilema? What are your suggestions?

How much better is running compared to walking to lose weight and get fit? I've tried running several times before in the past but I really hate it! I infinitely prefer walking. I've been walking every evening for two weeks now for between 1 1/2 to 2 hours. But I've heard that running is tonnes better for you. Wouldn't it be better to just do loads of walking instead of running, because I probably wouldn't stick with a running schedule?
How many running plays should be called in flag football per age group? I have two kids in flag football. 8 men teams blocking and rushing as many as you like. One age group 6-7. They throw almost every play and never complete a pass. I don't understand what the coach is thinking. They never run the ball. One kid is in 8-9 age group. Maybe 60% are pass plays. I'm thinking since their is blocking alot of plays should be running especially in 6-7 age group. How many running plays would you call as a percent if you were coaching these age groups?
What can running in shoes that are a little narrow do to the health of my feet? The width of my feet are in between medium and wide. I was curious to know what wearing shoes that are too narrow could do to my feet while running? Is it bad for my feet? What kind of problems could I run into?

I want to start running again, but I have bad knees & ankles. What should I do? I have had bad knees and ankles since junior high. I am now in college and want to start working out more. Specifically, I want to start running again. I've been running/jogging a mile about once a week, but my ankle gives out on me about half-way through (I usually power walk after that). I wear an ankle brace and a knee brace while running, and make sure to watch that I'm not running inappropriately. Is there maybe a certain kind of shoe I should be looking for? Any other suggestions?
How do I get started running in my exercise routine? When I exercise, I know the importance of doing cardio exercise as well as working out my muscles, but I hate running. How can I start running when I have such a disadvantage? I'd like to start running, however, I have one problem- I can't run at all. I don't think it's a problem with motivation or endurance because I don't have a problem pushing myself with other physical exertion. The problem is, I get debilitating cramps after running for a minute or so. It doesn't matter how fast I'm going, if it's a jog or more, it happens. How can I get myself used to running and start doing it on a regular basis if I can barely even get started? Can anyone suggest any methods that have worked for them or a gentle routine that could help get me started?

I only run about a quarter to half a mile per day, and I have good running shoes. What am I doing wrong? And is there anything I can do to fix it?

How do I start running for exercise? I am 16, 5'3, 101 lbs. and female. If you can't tell, I am average/underweight. Will a engine running synthetic have less wear on it than one running conventional? I have a 1991 Sonoma with 200k. It was ran with 0w30 Mobil 1 Synthetic since it had 80k on it. Will this engine have less wear on it than one running conventional. This truck was driven very hard by me and the previous owner, but still runs great. It is a 4.3 V6 TBI engine. The hard driving would be burnouts, fast takeoffs from streetlights, and donuts in grass fields.
