- If you live in North America, there is no easy route, flat or hilly. Any long distance riding requires that you be in good physical condition, you can't possibly do long rides day after day unless you are prepared. If your father is not fit, he will not be able to manage any route. Riding west to east is easier due to prevailing winds which will usually be at your back. If you do the proper preparation, hills will not be a problem, in any case it is impossible to ride across any continent without climbing hills.
- You and your father will need to train for a ride of that magnitude. The average distance you want to shoot for is 50-70 miles a day. You need to train with the gear that you will be carrying, it makes a big difference. You want to travel West to East to take advantage of the prevailing winds. http://bikeacrossamerica.org/
- Well, it's not ocean coast to coast, but it's Great Lakes coast to coast - a ride across the state of Michigan from Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. Pretty darn flat, I think, based on Google terrain map.
